Central Texas Volleyball Playoff Preview
It is playoff time in Texas and with our USA Today High School Sports powered by KVUE preview you will be ready! We will also be keep you updated on the outcomes of all the area’s teams, so be on the lookout for those results during the week.
Note: Volleyball stats can be difficult to come by and are always changing. We did our best with the statistics and information we could gather. State rankings are as noted by the Texas Girls Coaches Assosciation.
District 14-6A
1. (#2) Westlake 39-4 (16-0)
Coach: Al Bennett
2014 Season: Lady Chaparrals have cruised through their regular season with a 29- record. Currently they are the #2 ranked team in the state in Class 6A. Look for more of the same from Westlake as they go through the playoffs. They are a complete team that looks to the Central Texas kills per set leader, Michelle Irvin. Her teammate in attack is Jesse Turner tied for tenth with 2.7 kills per set. Looking for Irvin will be the top rated setter, Madison Borowski averaging 10.1 assist per set. Clarie Hahn’s 5.1 digs per set keeps the ball alive for the Lady Chaps attack. Then again, the ball rarely gets passed the tandem of Taylor Flaherty and Kaitlee Haralson. Flaherty leads Central Texas in blocks and Haralson is right behind her. This is the most complete starting six in the area and a state title looks plausible.
Playoff opponent: Rouse
2. Lake Travis 28-14 (13-3)
Coach: Lisa Kazmierski
Season: The Lady Cavaliers faltered a little at the start of their campaign. The young squad came together near the middle of the season and had a big win against state ranked Bowie. Since then the Lake Travis has been winners of 10-straight and hitting their stride at the best time. Leah Mulkey will be the key, she is the area’s number two ranked player in kills with a 3.8 per set average. Ally Posey has become more consistent on the attack and is tied for tenth in the area with 2.7 digs per set. Correy Cable and her 6.6 assist per set is good for the number eight spot in Central Texas. Libero, Lenah Ansari, has made a multitude of diving save this season and that is reflected in her 5.6 digs per set average, third best in the area. The pairing of Kayla Balenzentis and Mitchell Heirholzer lead the Lady Cavs block party. Both Balenzentis and Heirholzer rank in the top 10 in the area in blocks. Both Cable and Ansari are dangerous from the service line. The Lady Cavs look reclaim their status as one of the state’s best in the sport. A good run with a young squad could set the foundation for a nice run next year, but try telling this year’s squad to wait.
Opponent: Westwood
3. Bowie 33-13 (13-3)
Coach: Vickie Benson
Season: It has been a very emotional year for the Lady Dawgs right from the start. The untimely loss of Coach Jason Landers before the season shook the hearts of the entire Central Texas volleyball community. Coach Benson stepped in to guide an inexperienced team and had them playing inspired volleyball. They hit a road bump with the loss to Lake Travis in the middle of the season. They have bounced back since the defeat. They closed out the season winning six of eight. Sabrina Blanco sets the tempo with her 6.3 assist per set passing. The defensive paring of Alicia Morales and Kellen Dunn are ranked in the top ten in the area for digs per set. Bowie may be the most dangerous team from behind the service line. Sydney James and Kellen Dunn were number one and two in the area in total aces at one point in the season. In bottom half of the top 10, Neal and Morales were putting away the aces as well. If this team hits mid-season form again, they could make some noise.
Opponent: McNeil
4. Anderson 20-26 (9-7)
Coach: Shalanda Byers
2014 Season: It was a playoff race down to the wire. Anderson and Austin High were both in contention for the forth and final playoff spot on the last day of the season. Anderson took care of business against Akins, while Austin High dropped to Bowie which secured passage for Anderson. Now that they have reached the post-season they will need a full team effort to extend their playoff stay. There will be lots of heavy wishing, but the effort should be there.
Opponent: (#8) Hendrickson
District 13-6A
1. (#8) Hendrickson 32-7 (14-0)
Coach:Carrie Sulak
2014 Season: While Westlake is getting most of the attention in the Central Texas area, the Lady Hawks from up I-35 are talented squad in their own right. Like their 14-6A counterparts they ran the district table. The Lady Hawks end the year at #8 in the TGCA rankings. A ranking that high does not come without an abundance of talent. Kelsey Robinson is a pass master, with nearly has 10 assists per set. She will be looking for the scoring trio of Katelyn Lochner, Anna Lee Koester, and Amanda Lesikar to finish. Alyssa Carlin will keep the ball alive, she is good for about four digs per set. Also in defense, Koester and Kylie Brumley will be called upon to protect the net. A match with Westlake to determine who is the best Central Texas team in Class 6A could be a reality.
2. McNeil 33-9 (11-3)
Coach: Kate Kennedy
2014 Season: With Hendrickson running away with the district title, second place was left wide open. The Mavericks filled the second spot with a good district season in their own right. McNeil will rely heavily Mallory Davidson. She is a dynamo for the Mavs, finishing the season in the top five in assists per set and is a threat from the serve. Rebecca Latham, Kelly McConnell will be looked upon to score points off the kill. Samir Frazier and Hannah Weaver will be trying to keep the ball from hitting the court. Depth could be a concern, but the starting lineup is solid. After finishing the season winning six out of their last eight, this team will have a pretty even match up against Bowie.
Opponent: Bowie
3. Westwood 29-16 (8-6)
Coach:
Players to Watch:Brook Imirie and Cara Dolbear Emily Greene Kills blocks, Angela Yu assists,
2014 Season: Westwood almost missed the big dance, but a five set thriller to end the season granted them playoff passage. The passing game is one of the lynchpins for the Warriors. Angela Yu is in the top 10 in assists per set in area, while Vanessa Robinson and Pat Etherington are just as servicable with their passing. They will be looking to target Emily Greene to score from those passes. Brook Imirte ranks in the top five for blocks in the area while her netmate, Cara Dolbear is in the top 20. Kim Sladek will be a threat from the service and the floor. While talented, they will need to play a complete game to advance.
Opponent: Lake Travis
4. Rouse 20-20 (8-6)
Coach: Jacob Thompson
Players to Watch:Emily Hanaway, Morgan Curie, Haley Hutchinson
2014 Season: Coach Jacob Thompson has done a wonderful job in guiding the Lady Raiders to the their first ever playoff appearance. They are led by their superstar, Emily Hanaway. She is one of the better all around players in Central Texas. She leads her team in kills and aces, second on the team in digs. Upfront Haley Hutchinson will be patrolling the net and supporting in the attack. Morgan Currie ranks in the top 10 in the area with her 6.8 digs per set average. While Averi Foster and Taylor Black are both capable distributors. Unfortunately, they go against a team that is favored to send them home early.
Opponent: (#2) Westlake
District 26-5A
1. (#7) Ann Richards 33-5 (18-0)
Coach: Maura Cosgrove
2014 Season: It has been a terrific season for the Stars of Ann Richards. They currently rank at #7 in the state according to the latest TGCA polls. They have cruised through the district play with a perfect 18-0 record. There is still one thing left for Ann Richards to accomplish, the program’s first playoff victory. Coach Cosgrove has a talented squad that is looking beyond a first round appearance. Sierra Melomo is the fifth ranked assist getter in the area with 7.5 per set average. She will be looking for Jada Washington and Sofia Hruby to finish as both players average about 2.6 kills per set. Eliza Martin will help take care of the floor on defense with her 3.3 digs per set, while Hruby and Alexy Garza will protect the net. Hruby is in the top 5 in the Central Texas area in blocks on the season, while Garza comes in at the top 10. If a point needs to be scored from the service line look for Ally Reznicek to make the crucial serve, she is second in the area on the season. If they stay composed and win their first game, there is no telling how far this team can go.
Opponent: Vista Ridge
2. (#24) Bastrop 21-10 (15-3)
Coach: Nicole Creek
2014 Season: Despite finishing second in the district, the Lady Bears have had an remarkable season. It is not every year that squad is state ranked, but they rose all the way to number #18 and still finished the season at #24. The only thing that cooled them down was a home loss to Ann Richards. A lot of credit could go to their point-woman Glorilisha Carter. She averaged a kill per set rate of 3.3 that ranked her sixth in the area. While Carter takes care of the scoring, Jordan Crabb will keep opposition kill attempts away. The agile Crabb is second in the area with an amazing 6.2 per set. Her talents are not purely defensive, she deadly accurate from the service line as she led the area in total aces. With a possible return of points 9.5 per set off two players, the Lady Bears prove dangerous when their team is in sync. Still the Lady Bears have a very intriguing match up that might prove to be a close one.
Opponent: Vandegrift
3. McCallum 22-16 (13-5)
Coach: Amy Brodbeck
2014 Season: After winning a coin-flip McCallum claims sole possession of the third place in the district. The Knights are a unit that relies on good positioning and floor defense to keep the ball alive. In the air Eboni Clayton-Mitchell and her 2.8 kill per set (10th in the area) will have a chance to do some damage. After a loss to Bastrop, McCallum finished the regular season on a four game winning streak. They will need to be on their best game if they are to extender their playoff stay.
Opponent: (#22) Cedar Park
4. Cedar Creek 22-19 (13-5)
Coach: Jayson Langman
2014 Season: Last year, a young squad played hard but missed the postseason. This year the core of that squad returned and got over the regular season hump. They did so with solid defense. Lexi Barnnet is the best floor defender in Central Texas, averaging nearly seven digs per set. With her keeping the opposition at bay, it allows area top 10 setter, Shannon Klaus, to dish out the assists. Emily Riefel is the marksman from the service line, and Avery Tuggle is one of their better all around players. They are good team and battle hard, but even they know to get out of the first round it will take something extraordinary special.
Opponent: (#3) Dripping Springs
District 25-4A
1. (#2) Dripping Springs 36-5 (14-0)
Coach: Michael Kane
2014 Season: If there is a favorite to bring a state title to Central Texas in4A, it would have to be Dripping Springs. To go along with its TGCA #2 ranking, Max Preps has the Lady Tigers as their #32 team… in the entire nation. Coach Michael Kane has developed a machine that is firing on all cylinders. Look for Morgyn Greer and Ashley Waggle to score the majority of the points. They will average about 7.5 kills per set between the two. Madison Green will be the distributor as she averages 7.5 assist per set. Claire Gravell is also quite the passer as she ranks in the area’s top 10 in assists per set average. Autumn Rounsaville will clean up the floor with her digging defense, while Alissa Johnson is the team’s leading ace getter. The reserves are nearly just as capable as their starting counterparts. State championships are team efforts, and Dripping Springs has a really great team. State championship hopes are high, anything less would be considered a let down.
Opponent: Cedar Creek
2. (#22) Cedar Park 28-12 (11-3)
Coach: Chad Jones
2014 Season: Almost everything went as planned at Cedar Park this season. The only thing that did not go right were the two meetings with Dripping Springs. However, those battles with the Lady Tigers should provide the building blocks for a long playoff run for the Timberwolves. Cedar Park is a younger squad, but they already play like seasoned veterans. It starts with the pass, and no one is better in Central Texas than Lindsey Ledyard. She averages near an amazing 10 assists per set. Think about it… 10 of her sets will result in points, efficiently scary. Ledyard gets some help with about four of those assist going to Courtnee Curl, who is in the top five in area when it comes to kills per set. The defense is just as efficient as the offense. Dana Teets is the team’s leader in digs per set and on the serve. Alana Geymer is a formidable one upfront or on the backline. Luci Alberston throws block parties, just because she can. She is the area’s top blocker that is headed to the playoffs. Their opponents will have to play well on both sides of the ball to have a chance. There is a possible rematch against Dripping Springs waiting in the wings. That contest would make very compelling viewing.
Opponent: McCallum
3. Vandegrift -27-17 (9-5)
Coach: Kelly McCarter
2014 Season: The future is looking promising at Vandy. Two 2014 National Silver Junior Medalist are on the varsity and the ones on JV should get a call up for the playoffs. Considering the abundance of talent in the district, a third place finish is not the true representation of this squad. The point-woman is Bryn Recker, she is one the most dangerous scorers in the area. Most of her points come by way of the excellent passer Lexi Lopez. Lopez is averaging a little over nine assist per set, good for third in the area. The two form just a formidable combination in within their district, however they would be nearly tops in many other districts around the state. Morgan Waggoner will protect the backline, while Bella Benoit will protect upfront. Battles with the Dripping Springs and Cedar Park should prove valuable as the Vipers are consider the underdog in the first round.
Opponent: (#24) Bastrop
4. Vista Ridge 27-17 (9-5)
Coach: Holly Lamb
2014 Season: Vista Ridge just qualifying for the playoffs is a testament to how good this district is. This senior laden squad will be looking to try to advance and it will start with the talented Wacker sisters. Jaslyn and Jaryn will be a terror at the net, and teams will be fortunate to score kills against these two. Blair Nevit and Kylie Nothnagel will look to finish for points off the kill. At the center of this team will be the duo hub of Lauren Pick and Alyssa Cecil. Cecil will keep the floor clean as she averages nearly five digs per set. Pick is one of the best setters in the area, recognized by her nearly 10 assist per set average. They will be facing a really good team in the first round. However, given the strength of their district, there is a possibility to pull the upset.
Opponent: (#7) Ann Richards
District 17-5A
Winner of the district was Waco University.
2. Connally 15-25 (10-3)
Coach: Meghan Nichols
2014 Season: The Cougars had a fantastic run winning seven out their last eight, along with avenging a loss to Hutto, to end the season. The only loss in that run was to eventual district champs Waco University. Seeing how both teams swept each other during the season, it could of just been a bad night for Connally. Despite second place, the Cougars look poised to make some noise in the playoffs. Marissa Padron is what makes this team tick. Her passing ability will be essential to Connally’s offensive attack. Defensively, the ground is covered with Zhartaezia Bradley and her 3.8 digs per set. While getting out of the first round is doable, there is concern with their 2-7 neutral site record as this game is being played in Rockdale.
Opponent: A&M Consolidated
3. Hutto 19-26 (10-3)
Coach: Tanessa Sawyer
2014 Season: Hutto came up came one game short of Connally for the second spot in the tightly contested district. Still, this is a squad that showed some flashes of consistent play during the season. Look for the seniors to lead the way in this playoff push. Alyssa Beasley will be looked upon to score and defend for the Hippos. Kayla Durr will the one dishing out the assists. Hutto holds a big advantage in not having to travel as far as their opponent for their neutral site playoff game.
Opponent: College Station
4. Elgin (6-7) 11-31
Coach: Russell Larson
2014 Season: Elgin was caught in a weird place, significantly better than the bottom half of the district, not quite good enough to beat the top of the table. However, they have a really good excuse, this team is very young. It starts with the freshman setter Makenna Schultz. She already has a good read of the game as signified by her 6.6 assists per set, good enough to be placed in the area’s top 10. The duo of Selena Wright and Whitney Walker will be formidable opposition at the net. The lone senior, Jennifer Mikeska will be looked upon for not only her leadership, but her timely digs and ace serving ability. If they can put it all together a close first round will be possible.
Opponent: (#18) Huntsville
Class 4A
(#4) Wimberley
Coach: Thomas Kane 33-8 (11-0)
2014 Season: The Texans won five state titles between the years 1999-2007. That is impressive dominance, but they are still looking for their first state championship in this decade. This squad could net them the desired result. Wimberley will be led by their superstar Jacey Smith. She is tops in Central Texas 4A in kills per set and blocks, along with being one of the better servers in the area. Emily Ferguson will be along side Smith upfront looking to score points, Maggie Linkler will be there to help maintain the front defense. Smith’s kills will come by way of Marissa Gage’s passing. Gage leads her team in assists per set, but its her ability to score points behind the service line that is the real asset. Meagan Romano is not that far off from her teammate Gage, when it comes to her ability to assist and serve. On a team already loaded with an abundance of ability, Mattie Adams will patrol the floor. It is very complete starting unit. If this team plays to their potential throughout the playoffs, there is no reason why they cannot be celebrating a state title at the end of the tournament.
Opponent: Salado
(#5) Fredericksburg 36-10 (10-0)
Coach: Jason Roemer
2014 Season: The Texas Hill Country produces some really talented squads, and Fredericksburg is among one of them. Kendyl Stevens is one of the best setters in the area. She averages nearly 10 assists per set, and is formidable from the serve. Payton Robertson is the leading dig getter and top service ace. The tandem of Adrianna Hatmann and freshman Aubrey Sultemeier will be looked up to score points and block. Between the two they average nearly seven kills per set, and lead the team in total blocks. Another well rounded team, with the right mix of seniors and underclassman, if they play to their best, a chance at the title is not of the out question.
Opponent: Crystal City
(#13) Liberty Hill (9-0)
Coach: Gretchen Peterson
2014 Season: Another fantastic squad coming out of the Central Texas region. The Lady Panthers claimed their third straight district title, and now look towards the coveted state championship. Seniors, Jill Green and Peyton Redman, will pace the attack. They are hoping to have Allee Nix back to help with protecting the net. Kelly McKinzey is another of those of those good Central Texas setters. She reads the game, and has an abundance of talent to feed the ball. The first rounds should be a stroll, but the later rounds will test the complete make up of this team.
Opponent: Cuero
Burnet 14-13 (5-2)*not complete
Coach: Brent Kelley
2014 Season: Finishing behind the Liberty Hill for the district crown was Burnet. Their only two district losses that we know of came to the Lady Panthers. Their games against one of the best teams in the state should have the Bulldogs ready for the playoffs.
Opponent:
Taylor 21-19 (6-5)*not complete
Coach: Eric Soto
2014 Season: The Ducks had a pretty good ending to their season. They won six our of their last eight, and finished on a three-game winning streak. Their duo of Katelyn Roznovak and Bailey Talley will lead the the way for this squad. They are the team’s best two attackers and servers. While they take care of the points, leading blockers Virgina Kerley and Chasity Hatch will take care of the net. Savannah Kaspar will keep the ball alive with her seven digs per set. Breanna Clifton is the leading assist maker with 719 assist on the season. They played in a tough district, their first round opponent should not overlook them.
Opponent: Canyon Lake
La Grange (7-3)
Coach: Ann Rigden
2014 Season: The Leopards finished just outside the top spot. While volleyball is a team game, Riley Fisbeck is the playmaker. She is the leader in kills, is second in blocks and aces. Kelsey Parchman will team up with her to score and protect at the net. Hannah Gerecke and Destiny Psencik will patrol the floor. Another solid team that hopes to go far this year.
Opponent: Scarborough
Cadwell (7-3)
Coach: Janeann Giese
2014 Season: It is has been a nice season by all accounts for the Hornets. Things get started from the pass, and Haylie Ewald is averaging nearly 11 assist per set! The attacking duo of Hannah McManus and Abby Royall will average nearly nine kills per set between them. McManus is also the leading blocker on this squad, having twice as many blocks as the next closes player. Royall leads the team in digs, with Gaby Martinez just as comparable in the defense.
Opponent: Furr
Giddings 17-17- (1-6)*not complete
Coach: Shay Douglas
2014 Season: Thing went just well enough to get into the playoffs. However, given the strength their district they could be much better than advertised.
We will be keep you updated with the area’s smaller schools as they traverse the playoffs.

The Wimberley youth football team had a perfect season. On November 8th, Wimberley beat Marble Falls 19-0. Not only did they end their season 9-0, they also scored 276 points total this season. Through hard work and skills, the team of 4th and 5th graders fought every team and they played and dominated with defense. All of their opposing teams were unable to score against them. Every game was a shut-out!

St. Michael's Football Players Celebrate Booster Mom's Birthday
The St. Michael’s Crusaders love the support from all the boosters and fans. On Oct. 22, the football offensive line and moms showed their love and appreciation to one in particular, Vicki Townsend. Each player presented her with a rose and received a birthday cake from the players and moms.
“It threw me for a loop,” said Townsend on the surprise birthday celebration. “They had me in tears. I wasn’t expecting it.”
Since her son, junior Crusader Darien Townsend started playing for the football team with the offensive line and defensive end, she became heavily involved in the boosters.
“I wanted to put myself out there,” commented Townsend. She certainly has so far being involved in offensive line and team dinners on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The players love her macaroni and cheese and the steaks during district games. This year Townsend took the role of President of the Boosters at St. Michael’s Catholic Academy.
A fun way Townsend shows her support for the Crusaders is her shoes, yes her shoes. A local company based in Round Rock, Texas called, Stacy’s Custom Kicks and More personally made the shoes photographed below for her to show her pride.
The St. Michael’s Crusaders will be in the playoffs this season and Townsend will be sure to be there. After football is over, she will continue to support not only her son, Darien for track but, all the sports at St. Michael’s Catholic Academy.
HS VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS: Westlake vs Hendrickson
St. Stephen's Defeats Savio, 41-0
The St. Stephen’s Spartans defeated the St. Dominic Savio Eagles 41-0 to complete the 2014 season. The Spartans finished the 2014 season with a 5-3 won-loss record capped by stellar performances in their victory over Savio. The Spartan defense held Savio scoreless with a dominant defensive effort and the Spartan offense by both the run and the pass.
St. Stephen’s scored on each of its four possessions in the first quarter. Spartans senior quarterback, Taylor Brown led off the scoring with a 4-yard run. Brown then followed that up with three touchdown passes, one TD pass to senior wide receiver, Grant Owens and two TD passes to junior, tight end, Jordan Smith. Spartans junior kicker, Nicolas Griscom added 3 points via the point-after-touchdown (PAT) kicks to provide the Spartans with a 27-0 margin at halftime.
The Spartans closed out the game with a slashing TD run by Spartans, sophomore running back, Bryar Topo in the third Quarter and a final TD run by Taylor Brown in the fourth Quarter. Topo also had a long screen pass reception to go with long receptions by Owens and Smith to contribute to Brown’s 212 passing yards. Ryan Hanks, Ricky Vega, and Thomas Jensen contributed strong running along with Brown and Topo for the Spartan’s total 207 rushing yards for a balanced offensive attack. The two rushing touchdowns in the second half with the successful PATs by Griscom provided the final score of 41-0.
The Spartan defense also needs to be recognized in it’s only shut out of the year. The front seven of the defense, anchored by Enzo Monaco , Uzoma Akunebu , Jackson Bell , and Trevor Bell limited the Savio rushing attack to 102 yards. Ryan Hanks supported the rush defense as well as adding an interception. The secondary was paced by Brandon Tan’s stellar play with support from Topo, Owens, Jensen, Matthew Toming, and Gray Sutton to limit the Savio passing attack to only 77 yards.

Bi-District: The Playoff March Begins (with TAPPS included)
After an exciting regular season we are talking playoffs (yes, playoffs!). Thursday night started the action and I will give you a quick recap. As for Friday’s and Saturday’s game the best preview I could conjure up for you fine readers out there, I hope you enjoy…
Thursday, November 13
Lake Travis def. Rouse, 54-7
I had someone tell me that they were concerned about the Lake Travis defense the other day. I told them do not be surprised if Rouse QB, Billy Ray McCary caused them some fits. Apparently it was Rouse’s defense that should of been concerned. Even on a cold night where the ball is hard as a rock and hands are frozen numb, the Cavs kept their gameplan intact. Just like in the regular season it was Dominic Di Lira airing it out to his cavalcade of receivers. As for the aforementioned LT defense, not a single point given up. Rouse’s touchdown came off a fourth quarter fumble. They await the winner of the Atoscocita vs Spring game.
Vandegrift def. McCallum, 63-42
House Park is always a beautiful place to take in a high school football. Historic, with a beautiful backdrop of the State Capitol and glimpses of the Austin skyline. The cramped sidelines and close bleachers make for an intimate setting for a crushing game. A cold night, with playoff football, at House Park, might as well of been a football fanatic’s winter wonderland (minus the snow, but with freezing wind chill). While I knew that Sabian Cannon was going to cause a problem or two for the Vipers, I figured that Vandy would of won this contest handily. That was not the case. See it was an easy assumption to make, considering the Vipers qualified for the playoffs out of 25-5A aka one of the toughest district in the state. AISD schools have been known to struggle come playoff time. Instead it was the Vipers struggling. Despite Vandy returning a fumble for a touchdown, then scoring another on offense moments latter, the Knights of McCallum (again, they adopt this pronunciation) hung tough. McCallum scored 21 points in the second quarter to go into the half down just by seven. While the battle was close throughout the rest of the game Vandy’s duo of RB Travis Brannan and QB Jamie Hudson were just too much. Despite the win questions surround a defense that was supposed to be the strength of this Vipers team coming into the year. While that would concern most fans, Vandy has a knack for pulling out close games. Next up the winner between SA Brackenrdige and Lockhart.
Cedar Park def. Reagan, 68-0
I have been following Central Texas high school football in some fashion for five years now. Whether it be by broadcasting, filming, or some other medium. I have heard stories from the old-timers (no offense, I already sound like one and I know that will be me one day) about the glory days of Austin’s old Eastside. The late 60s, 70s, 80s, and early 90s saw some great teams come from East Austin: LBJ, Johnston, and Reagan. In fact, Mike Barnes showed me a tape for a Way Back Wednesday feature of a Reagan vs. LBJ game from the early 80s and the stands were going crazy. It was beautiful to see and I hope there is a day that it happens again. Reagan won a big game against Crockett last week just to make the playoffs. But going to The Gump against a rejuvenated Black Rain defense, and a Cedar Park team that has the superior talent, was just too much to overcome.
Giddings def. Wharton, 31-14
A neutral site affair that saw the Buffs up 10-0 at halftime. Wharton put up a touchdown with the extra point in the third, but Giddings put up 14 of their own. Really there was not much more that Giddings had to do after that. WOS or Scarborough await.
La Grange def. Columbus, 35-0
If you have been following the column, you know what I have said about La Grange in the past weeks. It is the Leopards and everyone else. True to that statement the undefeated Leopards did not break a sweat in Brenham. They rolled Columbus with the shutout. I would not want to be Kashmere or Orangefield, cause both look to meet a similar fate.
Wimberley def. Pearsall, 48-0
Apparently it was not just Leopards blanking people tonight. The Texans got in on the trend as well. Their offense looked crisp, while the defense was stellar. Pearsall could not do much except understand that it was not going to go their way on this evening. Wimberely gets the winner of Orange Grove and Ingleside.
Maypearl def. Jarrell, 32-17
Sometimes it can be difficult to find specifics and that my friends is where Twitter comes in (you should follow @MikeB_KVUE , @theSmashSimmons, and the rest of the KVUE crew just saying). From what I conjure Jarrell went into halftime with a 10-7 lead. Jarrell continued to lead until the fourth. Maypearl decided that 17 points were all that Cougars would be allowed to score. Maypearl peeled off three touchdowns in the fourth to take the win.
Blanco def. Boling, 60-0
I actually got to stop by this game played out in the beautiful Memorial Stadium in Bastrop (really, is a nice place) with KVUE Sports’ own Matt Mitchell. We got there during halftime and Blanco was already up 33-0. It was then I met up with Blanco High School Principal, Dr. Dustin Barton (super nice fellow by the way), who assured me he would keep me updated with Blanco Panthers volleyball as they take on Taft in the Regional Semifinal on Friday. Start of the third saw Blanco receive the kickoff and systematically drive down the field to punch in another touchdown. Safe to say it was over at that point. Panthers roll and will play Taft who won 37-16 over Dilley.
Shiner def. London, 63-0
Shiner’s only loss this season came to old 2A powerhouse Refuigo. The new 2A is essentially the old 1A, so Refugio dropped a division. Coming into the playoffs we knew Shiner was going to be good, really good. The Comanches put up 14 in the first, 35 in the second, and 14 in the third. A that point the fourth quarter was a formality, but Shiner wanted the shutout, and got just that. Up next, a game that should have many more people watching because they will take on the Mason Punchers.
Now that we are done with the Thursday night games, let us talk about Friday night. We will try to keep it short.
Austin High vs. Hendrickson @ Dragon Stadium, 7:30pm
Austin High comes into the contest winners of their last three games. I have seen the Maroons play a few times this season. Their QB Beau Kalbaucher, is the real deal. He can sling that ball down field with ease. The offense knows how to put up points. I know defensively the Maroons can hit, but can they stop someone for a full four quarters? They let people get back into ballgames and that can not happen in the playoffs. Henderickson qualified out of the much tougher 13-6A. Having to win their last two games to get in. I have seen the Hawks play also this year, when they barley lost (38-35) to Stony Point at home. The Hawks can score as well, and defensively they have a stud cornerback in Oklahoma commit P.J. Mbanasor. I’m not sure if Beau will try to test P.J., but if the Maroons defense is serviceable it could be close.
Bowie vs. Cedar Ridge @ Burger Center, 7:30pm
Any year at Bowie is a good year when they beat Westlake. The Bulldogs only district loss was to Lake Travis, but the way they loss was concerning. It was big game and they did not play well, at home no less. They wiped away some of the doubt with the 45-14 drubbing they put on Del Valle to end the season. Well now another big game at home is on the horizon, and I want to know if the Dawgs are coming to play. I know they have Preston Wheeler and offensives weapons around him. They take on a wounded Cedar Ridge squad who squeaked into the playoffs. QB1 Travis Malesky was lost for the year when he broke his leg against Rouse. The offense has struggled under new QB1 Daryl Lyndon. Having to beat Westwood to get into the playoffs, the Raiders barley beat a dismal Westwood team 28-21. Bowie is not Westwood, and Bowie should be the favorite in the contest.
Round Round vs. Westlake @ Chaparral Stadium @ 7:00pm
Westlake is having what they would consider a down year, finishing third in the 14-6A behind Lake Travis and Bowie. The problem against those two teams was the Westlake offense. Probably not as loaded as years past, but as usual the Chaps have a good young QB in Sam Ehlinger. If Westlake looks to make a run in these playoffs, they will need to get that offense in sync. It is not going to be easy. I have seen Round Rock very early in the season. I must admit I was not impressed with QB Collin Hinson during that game they defeated Stony Point. He ran the ball well, but throwing it was another story. But since then he and the rest of the Dragons have been on a tear. Their offensive line is huge and just blows people off the ball, giving Hinson more than enough lanes to run through and time to pass. However, the Dragon defense has not really received their due. They have only given up 33 points in their last five games, that average out to a scary 6.6 points per contest. However Westlake does have one huge advantage. Despite winning their district outright, first time since the early 90s, the Dragons must travel to Westlake. Westlake only loss came to Bowie at home this season. We have seen this story before, underwhelming Westlake team upsets a favorite and then makes a long playoff run. The Dragons are going out to prove they are the real deal.
Hutto vs. College Station @ Hippos Stadium, 7:oopm
Now I can admit I do not know too much about College Station High School. The only thing I really know about College Station is what I experienced as a student at Texas A&M: lots of traditions, playing for a national championship with Aggie Rugby, Midnight Yell, what “humping it” really means, and the accompanying yells that go with it, how to survive Northgate, and how to pass a college exam on no sleep (I can admit I was not the best student). My research has showed me that College Station HS is no slouch, in fact they look pretty dangerous. QB Cole Whittlesey has thrown 23 TDs to two INTs. RB Quinterrian White has 17 rushing TDs. WR Jeremiah Booker averages 17.6 yards per reception. Offense looks very potent, they play decent defense, and for comparisons sake, they beat Elgin 51-34. I have seen Hutto play once this season, and it was against one of the best teams in the state, Temple. They looked outclassed in the first half, but in the second Hutto’s defense stepped up to contain Baylor commit Chad President. Then Hutto’s offense, behind playmaker Davion Davis and QB Tyler Herrick, started a comeback. Poor clock management ultimately did them in. My lingering question was, if Davion Davis was fully healthy entering that game, would they have won? Granted the Hippos lost to Elgin in close one, but after such a emotionally draining lost at Temple there was bound to be some drop-off in production. A close 21-20 over Manor put the Hippos back on track. I think it can go either way, but Hutto needs to keep it close against a talented College Station team at the beginning to have a shot to win.
East View vs. Bastrop @ Hawks Stadium (Pflugerville), 7:30pm
If you don’t know, you should know that this East View squad has some serious playmakers on offensive. Mr. Motivation, Apollos Hester is their playmaking receiver, while WR Adrian Contreras has speed. They can punish with running game, with RB Cornelio Garcia who has a bruising running style. My concern for the Patriots is that lots of those playmakers play both offensive and defensive the entire game. Some of them are key special teams players too. Despite the wins, they have had trouble closing out games. I think they get tired at the end of games, and maybe the Bears can exploit that. I expect Carrington Waites to get a lot of touches in this game. He is one of the better rushers in the area, and Bastrop would benefit the longer it can keep their offense on the field. Players exert more energy playing defense, so that would be my gameplan and the Bears have the personnel to do it. Still, most would agree that this is East View’s game to lose.
Manor vs. Bryan @ Mustang (Manor) Stadium, 7:30pm
When the season began people predicted that Sadd Jackson’s squad would of been near the top of 17-5A. The Mustangs had a good 2013, and expected 2014 to exceed the previous year. Instead we got a Mustang team that made the playoffs by the narrowest of margins. The predominately young Mustangs have relied on underclassmen to get them to this point and will need a complete game to win. The little information I found on Bryan should frighten any Manor fan. Bryan rolled through district and apparently only lost one contest this year.
Elgin vs. Huntsville @ Huntsville
Last year the Elgin Wildcats were offensively dynamic. They had the Simmons brothers, plus the Snell brothers, and the Mario Brothers (okay, I am just kidding and making sure you are paying attention). They were fast, explosive, and could put points on the board in the blink of an eye. I knew it was going to be difficult to replace the Simmons guys, but the Snell’s stepped up. The non-district schedule was tough, but they were undefeated in district play until their final game of the season against Temple. Granted both teams were in the playoff by then. However, the district title was on the line. I think with the two division format the district title has lost its luster in the Texas high school football game. I saw Elgin play last week and was left wondering. Kyle Snell seems more than capable guiding the offense, but I just did not see it last Friday night. The rest of the Elgin’s offense looked pedestrian at best. Maybe they just gameplaned to not give too much away before the playoffs? Temple torched them with out their stud QB Chad President who was resting a knee injury. Despite the short comings, Elgin matches up well against Huntsville. Huntsville is one of those teams that beats the teams it should and the loses to the ones it is expected to lose to. Let us see which side of the line Elgin belongs on.
Liberty Hill vs. China Spring @ Copperas Cove, 7:30pm
Liberty Hill is used to being here. They rolled right through district and their only losses came to Wyile and an undefeated La Grange squad. The Panthers are the type of team that Knute Rockne would love, because they don’t pass often. RB Jon Shannon is the focal point of the rushing game, but LH has about five other guys that can do damage while carrying the rock. The Panthers are hoping to replicate the success of their volleyball team who is having an extended playoff run after pulling out shocking sweep against one of the best programs in the state (sorry to get volleyball into your football, but that whole school is excelling athletically thus far). China Spring should be in for a long night.
Rockdale vs. Comanche
Rockdale was scary good this season. Their only slip up came when they were stung by the Bumblebees of Little River Academy. They quickly fixed their problems and walked away with the district title. Comanche lost two out of their last three, and that win was a close one 27-20. I do not expect it to be close when they play Rockdale. Offensively Rockdale has playmakers at every position, so it should just be a chance for Rockdale players shine Friday.
Burnet vs. Taylor
The locals have a saying that it is “Burnet durnit”. That has hold true when talking about the best team 13-4A Div.1. The Bulldogs were trouncing the competition, but then La Vega stunned them. They got right back on track the next week after the slip up. Here are few names to look for in the stat line come Saturday morning, QB Austin Moore, along with receivers Joel Johnson and Cody Jones. Their aerial attack would have Don Coryell giddy. Taylor on the other hand just squeaked in by the narrowest of margins. The 17-14 victory over the Battlin’ Billies is what got them here. I just do not think they have enough to stun Burnet.
Smithville vs. Bellville
Smithville plays in a tough district and had a rough year. Although, everything lined up for the Tigers at just the right time as they beat Salado for the last playoff spot. That could be the highlight of the season as Bellville is just terrorizing its opponents.
Gonzales vs. La Feria
With the way the non-district started for the Apaches it looked like it was going to be a dismal season. While you want your team to win every game, the non-district schedule is more of a dress rehearsal for the district slate. Gonzales apparently thought so too, because it just came out of nowhere to compete for the district crown. Meanwhile the La Feria Lions (Rio Grande Valley in the house!) lost their last two games. Despite me wanting to pull for a team from my hometown area of Texas, I do not see Gonzales losing.
Thrall vs. Johnson City
Thrall is another team that is looking to replicate its volleyball team’s success. The thing with Thrall is that I am not sure which team will show up. They win the games they should on paper and lose the ones that most say they will. One thing for sure is that they should put up some points as they have a good QB in Dawson Solis. However, Johnson City is having a dream season. No one, expected the Eagles to be this good this year. Their only district loss coming to the district champs, the Mason Punchers. Johnson City is the favorite, but with little playoff experience on their squad the nerves could possibility get to them.
Cameron Yoe vs. Glen Rose
The Yoemen are in championship form as they steamrolled through their last four opponents. The 2013 State Champs, have their eyes set on this year’s prize and they are doing it with impenetrable defense. While the hard hitting defense sets the tone, the offensive is more than capable of putting points on the board. Traion Smith will lead the ground attack, while Aaron Sims and Sicory Smith will be the aerial threats to watch out for. Glen Rose is not a bad team by any means, but they do enter the contest on a two-game skid. Stat Fact: The Cameron Yoe boys teams are known as the Yoe Men while the girls teams are known as the Lady Yoe (found that out this week and wanted to pass that tidbit along).
Luling vs. Hempstead
These are the fact for Luling, they won two out of their last five, and they have failed to win away from home. The playoff game is in Pflugerville. Then you have to throw in the fact that Hempstead is very good. So good in fact they beat the second place team in their district, Edna 75-18 (yes, it is correct I doubled checked).
Regents vs. Grapevine Faith
Would you look at that, someone got some TAPPS into my playoff preview. I will admit I hardly get any TAPPS information, but I will see what I can pass along to you. Regents has been strong this year, as offensively they know how to put points on the board. They averaged 40.6 points per game in district play. Defensively the only time they lost big was against Holy Cross 47-17. Apparently Grapevine Faith is similar, but not as dominate. Regents do not play well at home for some reason, but they are undefeated on the road. I am not sure where the game is being played, but Regents should be the favorite.
Round Rock Christian vs. Katy Faith West
Wow, more TAPPS! From what I found RR Christian can put up the points, 50.4 per contest in district. Their defense pitched two shutouts before losing the final game against Geneva. Katy Faith West have lost three of their last four. However, if we look back to the first game of the season KFW beat RRC 52-30. Teams are always different at end of the season from where they start. I am really interested to see if KFW can repeat their success or if RRC is just that much better now.
Moving on to the Saturday slate of games…
Vista Ridge vs. LBJ @ Gumpton Stadium, 2pm
LBJ along with Regan are part of the renaissance of Austin’s Eastside football. The Jaguars were just one win shy of winning the district title. I had a chance to travel along side KVUE Sports’ Shawn Clynch to take in a game at Nelson Field. Head Coach Andrew Jackson has done a wonderful job turning things around on the Eastside. While all the players should be commended for a job well done, QB Avery Jackson is star of the show. What I saw is a lighting quick kid who can break ankles and make people look silly. I do not think there is anyone who can catch him from behind. As good as LBJ as been this year, they will need to play perfect football to beat Vista Ridge. VR almost won the district title in the vaunted 25-5A. They faltered down the stretch but are still scary good. QB Matt Snow is a dangerous dual-threat in his own right. If you want to talk speed, VR has it. I saw them play Georgetown this year. While Singleton when out with an injury in that game, I knew how good he could be. But it was Isiah Vilaire who stole the show. He is blazing fast, shifty, and could be the X-factor in this contest.
Lockhart vs. San Antonio Brackenridge
Lockhart’s win over Floresville is what got them into the playoffs. The end of the season loss to San Marcos is a bit concerning considering the playoffs were next. Now they must return to the scene of last week’s lost and take on a San Antonio Brackenridge squad that is destroying people this year. To make matters even tougher for Lockhart, Brack plays very well on the road as they are 4-1 on the season.
Lago Vista vs. Whitney
Coach Alan Haire has the Vikings back in the playoffs again. One of the most consistent teams in the area, the Wing-T offense is alive and well in Lago. Although this year was a much tougher trek to the playoffs than years past. Look for them to keep the ball on the ground, and look for their tight end, Daegan Fowler when going to the air. Whitney is the total opposite, as they have a very potent air attack. QB Brett Gilchrist has thrown for 3,606 yards and a whopping 41TD’s; that is an average of four touchdown passes per game. With such a quick strike offense, Lago Vista’s best defense would be to keep running and control the clock. Whitney looks scary.
St. Michael’s vs. Trinity Christian Addison
St. Michael’s looked strong finishing the season with four straight wins. St. Michael’s can put the points on the board as well as anybody in TAPPS. Trinity Christian Addison does boast an offensive attack of their own. SM has the better record, and maybe that shows their true potential. There was not much more I info I could get on short notice here folks.
Hyde Park vs. Fort Worth Christian
Three out of the last four games were big wins for Hyde Park as they outscored their opponents 147 to 21. Last week saw them lose 20-7. If Hyde Park wants to win they need to get back in form because FW Christian does not lose many ball games. Although as luck would have it FWC did lose mighty handily 42-14 last week. Like I have stated before I do not know too much about what happens in TAPPS, but it seems that this game can go either way.
